WebChuck Palahniuk grew up in Burbank, Washington. His parents divorced when he was 14—an event that would greatly influence his writing. As a young man he held a number of odd jobs, including working as a diesel mechanic, and also volunteered at homeless shelters and hospitals. Palahniuk didn’t begin writing until he was 30. Palahniuk says that his writing style has been influenced by authors such as the minimalist Tom Spanbauer (whose weekly workshop Palahniuk attended in Portland from 1991 to 1996), Amy Hempel, Mark Richard, Denis Johnson, Thom Jones, Bret Easton Ellis and philosophers Michel Foucault, Friedrich Nietzsche and Albert Camus.
